Site Specific Character Led Workshops

We worked with Historic Scotland to design a truly immersive learning experience for visiting P4-7 school children at Stanley Mills in Perthshire.

Janet Scott, a mill worker from 1838, welcomes children for their first day of work at Historic Scotland's Stanley Mill in Perthshire. During their workshop the children discover what daily life was really like for working children during the Victorian period by taking on the role of a child who worked in the mill and becoming a 'scavenger', 'doffer' or 'piecer'. At the end of their exhausting action packed day (including taking lunch in 'period'!) the children are invited to compare their experience with child workers in developing countries in the present day.

We worked alongside the Learning Development Officer at the Mill to prepare a range of pre and post visit activities for teachers to deliver in class.

We have also developed a Mill Inspectors workshop for S1/2 pupils where the children are invited to the year 1835 to investigate life at the Mill in role as Inspectors for Parliament and then to debate the improvements that should — or should not — be made.

If you would like to book a visit for your class to meet Janet at Stanley Mills contact the Learning Development Officer direct on 01738 825925 or email hslearning@scotland.gsi.gov.uk.

If you would like to discuss creating a site specific character led workshop for your museum or site please contact us.

"The children absolutely loved it. They really enjoyed the drama workshop and I was amazed by how they all moved in to character and spoke to the lady running the activity as if she was the character she was portraying. Everyone learned something because all learning styles were catered for — brilliant!"

"Superb workshop covering all aspects of working life for children in the mill. Particularly liked the link with [20th century] child workers which was discussed at the end of the workshop. Would highly recommend!"
